Frequently asked questions

How is the AMC 10/12 scored?
25 questions: 6 points for each correct answer, 1.5 points for each question left blank, 0 for each wrong answer. Maximum 150; leaving everything blank scores 37.5.
What score do I need to qualify for AIME?
From the November 2026 competitions (2027 AIME), MAA replaced floating percentile cutoffs with fixed thresholds: 100+ on the AMC 10 or 85+ on the AMC 12 makes you eligible to register for AIME.
Should I guess or leave questions blank on the AMC?
A blank is worth 1.5 points; a random guess among 5 choices is worth 6 × 1/5 = 1.2 expected points — so a blind guess loses value. Guess only when you can eliminate at least one answer choice (4 choices → 1.5 expected points, break-even).
What changed about AIME in 2027?
Besides fixed qualification thresholds (AMC 10 ≥ 100, AMC 12 ≥ 85), the 2027 AIME moves to Pearson testing centers, is delivered electronically on February 5–6 2027, and carries an $85 registration fee. Qualifying makes you eligible to register, not automatically entered.
What is a Distinguished Honor Roll score?
MAA’s Honor Roll of Distinction goes to the top 1% of each exam (Distinction = top 5%). In fall 2025 the top-1% lines were 136.5 (10A), 133.5 (10B), 150 (12A — perfect scores only) and 145.5 (12B). These remain percentile-based.
When is the AMC 10/12 held?
Every November, in two versions about a week apart — for 2026: AMC 10A/12A on November 5 and AMC 10B/12B on November 13. You may take both A and B; one qualifying score is enough for AIME.

Scoring: official MAA rules (6 / 1.5 / 0 per correct / blank / wrong, 25 questions). Fixed AIME thresholds from MAA’s August 2026 announcement of the 2027 AIME at Pearson testing centers. Historical cutoffs and honor-roll lines from AoPS records; Distinction and Honor Roll of Distinction remain percentile-based and are announced after each exam.
