Frequently asked questions
How are IB Diploma points calculated?
Six subjects graded 1–7 (max 42) plus up to 3 bonus points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay via the official matrix — a maximum of 45. CAS must be completed but earns no points.
How many points do I need to pass the IB Diploma?
At least 24 points — but points alone are not enough. You also need: no grade 1 in any subject, at most two grade 2s, at most three grades of 3 or below, at least 12 points from HL subjects, at least 9 from SL, no E in TOK or the EE, and completed CAS.
What is a good IB score?
The May 2025 world average was 30.6 points with an 81.9% pass rate. About 10% of candidates score 40–45 — the range competitive at Oxbridge and the Ivy League. Most selective UK offers sit between 36 and 42.
How do TOK and EE bonus points work?
Your TOK and EE letter grades (A–E) combine in the official matrix: two As give 3 points, A+B gives 3, B+B or A+C gives 2, down to 0 — and an E in either means no diploma regardless of your total.
How does an IB score convert to a US GPA?
There is no official conversion — the IB explicitly does not endorse one, and US universities recalculate applicants’ GPAs themselves. A common counseling convention maps 7→4.0, 6→3.7, 5→3.0, 4→2.0; this calculator shows that as an unofficial approximation only.
Are IB grade boundaries public?
No — the IB releases boundaries only to schools, per session and timezone. Sites republishing them are unofficial, and boundaries move every session, so treat any percentage-to-grade prediction as an estimate.
Rules: official IBO DP passing criteria (TOK/EE matrix, 24-point minimum, grade conditions, HL 12 / SL 9 points, CAS). Context statistics from the IB May 2025 Final Statistical Bulletin (mean 30.6, pass rate 81.9%, 9.8% scoring 40–45). The GPA figure uses a common counseling convention — the IB does not endorse any GPA conversion. Confirm your session’s regulations with your IB Coordinator.
