How many raw marks do I need for a 6.5 on the TMUA?
On the official 2023 conversion, 21 out of 40 (about 53%) mapped to 6.5 overall. Because the conversion is re-derived for every sitting, treat this as a guide: on a harder paper, slightly fewer marks reach 6.5; on an easier one, slightly more.
What is a good TMUA score for Cambridge?
Successful Cambridge applicants typically score around 6.5 or higher, and 7.0+ is strong. Cambridge uses the TMUA holistically rather than as a hard cutoff — a lower score does not automatically rule you out.
What TMUA score do Imperial and LSE look for?
Imperial Mathematics has used a threshold around 7.5 for a guaranteed interview, while its business-side courses and LSE programmes commonly sit lower (LSE has cited scores around 5.3–6.0 as competitive, varying by course and year). Always check the current-year course page.
Is there negative marking on the TMUA?
No — a wrong answer scores the same as a blank one, so you should answer every question. With 20 questions per paper, even random guesses on the ones you cannot attempt are worth expected marks.
Are Paper 1 and Paper 2 scored separately?
Since the 2024 sitting (run by UAT-UK), only one combined score on the 1.0–9.0 scale is reported. Before that, each paper also received its own grade — this calculator still shows indicative per-paper grades from the 2023 tables so you can see which paper is costing you more.
What percentile is a TMUA score of 7.0?
Roughly the top 10% of the cohort in recent sittings. The mean score is typically in the 4.5–5.5 range, and 9.0 is reached by only the top 1–2%.
Did the TMUA replace the MAT for Oxford?
Yes — Oxford announced that from the 2026 admissions cycle its Mathematics and Computer Science courses use the TMUA instead of the MAT. If you were preparing for the MAT, this calculator and the TMUA specification are now the relevant targets.
