Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Needed score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With a 88% current grade, a 20% final and a 90% target: (90 − 88×0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 98%. The calculator does this for any numbers.
Can my final exam bring my grade up a whole letter?
Only if it carries enough weight. A final worth 20% can move your course grade at most 20 points in either direction — and only if you score 0 or 100. The “possible range” line above shows exactly how far your grade can move.
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?
Your target is mathematically out of reach with this final alone. Check whether extra credit, dropped quizzes or rounding policies apply — or aim for the highest reachable grade, which the calculator shows.
Does this work when the final replaces my lowest test score?
Not directly — replacement policies change the math. Recompute your current grade as if the lowest test were removed, adjust the category weights, then use the calculator with those numbers.
What grade do I need on the final to pass with a 60?
Set the target to 60 and enter your numbers. For example with a 55 current grade and a 25% final you would need (60 − 55×0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 75%.
Method: course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the final’s weight. Solve for the final score. Assumes a single final exam and no replacement/extra-credit policies.
