How do I calculate a test grade percentage?
Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply by 100. For example 17 correct out of 20 is 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%.
How many wrong is a 70 on a 25-question test?
You can miss 7 questions: 18 ÷ 25 = 72%, while missing 8 gives 68%. The grading chart below shows every possible score for your question count.
What letter grade is 85%?
On the most common US scale, 85% is a B. Typical bands: A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F below 60 — but schools vary, so check your syllabus.
Does this work for quizzes with half-point questions?

How do teachers grade quickly by hand?
The classic trick is the fraction shortcut: each wrong answer costs 100 ÷ (number of questions) percent. On a 20-question test each miss is 5 points; on 25 questions each miss is 4 points.
Letter grades use the most common US scale (A 90–100 · B 80–89 · C 70–79 · D 60–69 · F <60) with +/− at the usual x7/x3 boundaries. Your school's scale may differ.
