How do weighted grades work?
Each category (homework, tests, final…) counts for a fixed share of the course grade. Multiply each category average by its weight, then add them up: grade = Σ (average × weight) ÷ Σ weights.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator normalizes automatically — it divides by the total weight you entered — and warns you, so a 30/30/30 setup still computes correctly as thirds.
How is a weighted grade different from a simple average?
A simple average treats every assignment equally. Weighted grading makes a 90% on a test worth more than a 90% on homework whenever tests carry more weight — which is why one bad exam moves your grade more than several missed homeworks.
How do I include a category with no grades yet?
Leave it out (or set its weight to 0) to see your grade so far. To see what you would need in that category, use the final grade calculator with the remaining weight.
Method: overall grade = Σ (category average × weight) ÷ Σ weights. Letter grades use the common US scale (A 90+ · B 80+ · C 70+ · D 60+); your school's scale may differ.
